“American Idol” has been on for 7 seasons now and for sure it’s left it’s mark on Hollywood. Just think of Shrek and Barbie, both of them using the American Idol theme song and continuing the growing follow of Idol. However as most of us know shows lose their shine after a few years and most of them end up being canceled, or completely re-changed. The question being, is American Idol ready to throw in the towel?
The Nelson ratings show that Idol has lost over a fifth of the female demographic between the ages of 18-34. It might not sound like a big deal, but women are the biggest constituencies. Mariah Carey one of Pop musics biggest stars ended up being the lowest rated Tuesday show in 5 years. Wednesday’s show where they gave the boot to Kristy Lee Cook was the lowest rating Wednesday since the first season. Of course Idol still brings in around 29 million viewers and for a show on it’s 7th season that’s amazing.
Beckman a producer for the show said that, “We have to think about how it’s presented,” and, ““These are questions you naturally ask when a show is in its seventh year.” Which of course begs the question, what is going to happen next year? What changes will they make? A new judge perhaps?
Do you still watch American Idol? How many think it’ll continue being a huge hit? Will it decline? I know that I’ve watched the show for a few years now and I’ve enjoyed it for the most part. However, this last season has been a big bore for me. I still TiVo it, but I don’t have an urge to watch it right away and find that more often then not I’m viewing it a week later.
